How To Keep Your House Clean (Including Those Forgotten Areas)

how to keep your house clean

You might think that you know how to keep your house clean, but are you really giving it the attention that it needs?

Whether you’re:

  • A homeowner looking to deep clean your house before the holidays.
  • A dedicated cleaner looking to provide your clients with the best service.
  • Or a cleaning business owner designing your festive cleaning packages.

Now is the time to make sure that your cleaning routine covers every inch of the house – including these key areas that Brits are always forgetting to clean!

Have You Forgotten To Clean These Areas?

Here are the 8 places throughout the house that UK households clean the least – or forget to clean altogether.

Warning: there might be some on here that you have never even thought of before, so take a look and make sure you know how to keep your house clean without missing any spots.

1. Oven Gap

This tiny slot between the oven and the units on either side is one of the most missed places on this list, but it is also one of the hardest spots to reach.

However, crumbs, sauce splashes, and spilled foods can all get in there quite easily, so if you’re forgetting to clean this (like most UK households) then now is the time to add it to your pre-Christmas cleaning checklist.

2. Extractor Fan

This is particularly easy to forget about, but you will be amazed at just how much grease builds up in these fans!

All the steam and smoke from cooking is sucked up into this mechanism and caught in the filter, and if you continue to forget to clean it then eventually it will become too dirty to work properly, so unplug the fan, remove the filter, and give it a good clean with a soapy cloth.

3. Door Handles

We don’t often look at door handles, choosing to feel for them instead, but if you were to take a closer look when considering how to keep your house clean you’d realise just how dirty they have become.

This buildup presents a risk to household health (we are currently at the height of flu season after all), and can quickly ruin the finish of metal handles, unless wiped down with an appropriate cleaning solution every few months.

4. Light Switches

Cleaning these electrical fixtures may feel a little more stressful than cleaning door handles, but they still need to be kept clean to prevent cross-contamination.

To safely clean a light switch, all you have to do is spray the cleaning solution onto a clean microfibre cloth instead of directly onto the switch and use this to wipe it down before drying it with a new cloth.

5. Laptop Keyboard

We’ve all seen the stats claiming that the average keyboard harbors more bacteria than a toilet seat, so if you or your clients have a home office then the keyboard must be included in your cleaning routine.

There is no point hoovering the floor and dusting the desk if this germ hotbed is going ignored, and whilst you’re there, give the computer screen, the mouse, and the phone a weekly wipe down as well.

6. Mattresses

It is recommended that you clean your mattress at least once every 6 months – but are you forgetting to do this?

If so, then now is the time to break that habit and arrange an ongoing mattress cleaning package to tackle any stains or bacteria. Or, if you are a cleaner yourself, why not start offering this important but overlooked service to your clients?

7. Bathroom Corners

Your current cleaning routine might include hoovering the bathroom or giving the floor a mop every few months, but even if you’re remembering to do this you might still be missing key areas out.

Cleaning every inch of the floor, including around the toilet, is essential (especially if you have young children who are still being potty trained), so get right into the corners with the mop and don’t forget to wash the bath mats frequently.

8. Around The Dog Bowl

Finally, here’s an area that pet owners frequently forget about, but that needs to be kept clean just as much as any other surface.

Any hungry dog or cat will leave little splatters on the floor when eating and water bowls can also leave hard water stains on the floor over time, so the next time you wash these bowls make sure you also give the floor underneath a wipe down with some antibacterial spray.
